Archer Daniels Midland Company was incorporated in Delaware in 1923, successor to the Daniels Linseed Co. founded in 1902. During the last five years, the Company has experienced significant growth, spending approximately $3.5 billion for construction of new plants, expansions of existing plants and the acquisitions of plants and transportation equipment. There have been no significant dispositions during this period. The Company incurred charges of $13 million, $83 million and $108 million during 2003, 2002 and 2000, respectively, related to the abandonment and write-down of certain long-lived assets. The Company is principally engaged in procuring, transporting, storing, processing and merchandising agricultural commodities and products. The Company's operations are classified into four reportable business segments: Oilseeds Processing, Corn Processing, Wheat Processing and Agricultural Services. Each of these segments is organized based upon the nature of products and services offered. The Company's remaining operations are aggregated and classified as Other. | |
