The financial statements in this report represent the consolidation of Waste Management, Inc., a Delaware corporation, its majority-owned subsidiaries and entities required to be consolidated pursuant to the Financial Accounting Standards Board's ("FASB") Interpretation No. 46, Consolidation of Variable Interest Entities ("FIN 46"). Waste Management, Inc. is a holding company that conducts all of its operations through its subsidiaries. The terms "the Company," "we," "us" or "our" refer to Waste Management, Inc. and its consolidated subsidiaries. We are the leading provider of integrated waste services in North America. Through our subsidiaries we provide collection, transfer, recycling and resource recovery, and disposal services. We are also a leading developer, operator and owner of waste-to-energy facilities in the United States. Our customers include commercial, industrial, municipal and residential customers, other waste management companies, electric utilities and governmental entities. During 2003, none of our customers accounted for more than 1% of our operating revenue. We employed approximately 51,700 people as of December 31, 2003. Our parent company was incorporated in Oklahoma in 1987 under the name "USA Waste Services, Inc." and was reincorporated as a Delaware company in 1995. In a 1998 merger, Waste Management, Inc. became a 100% owned subsidiary and changed its name to Waste Management Holdings, Inc.
